Surrounding natural wonders:
Rivers and Lakes
The Fall River and adjacent rivers are legendary. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River, the Warm river, the Teton river, the Madison river, the Gallatin River, the Buffalo River, the many other rivers and streams in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem and Upper Snake River Basin, and of course the Fall River are renown as world-class fly fishing destinations. The crisp clean, waters tap right out of Yellowstone.
Pristine lakes dot the region. Whether you're a boater, floater, photographer, or another spieces of lake recreationalist in-between, your choices are many. Nearby lakes include: Island Park Reservoir, Ashton Reservoir, Pallisades Reservoir, Henrys Lake, Hebgen Lake, Grassy Lake, Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake, Lewis Lake, Shoshone Lake and Yellowstone Lake.
National parks
Two of the greatest natural treasures of the United States are in your backyard. Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton Park are a short trip away. Though not a direct route, Ashton, ID, is just 18 miles from the southwest corner of Yellowstone.
National forests, wilderness areas and refugees
Besides Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks there is an abundance of other National Park System land in the region. National forests include Caribou-Targhee, Bridger-Teton, Gallatin, Beaverhead-Dearlodge, Challis, Custer and Shoshone.
Wilderness areas include Jedediah, Lee Metcalf, Absaroka-Beartooth, Teton, Washake and Gros Ventre. Red-Rocks Lake and Camas wildlife refugees are nearby. The National Elk Refuge is north of Jackson. Other points of note are the close by St. Anthony Sand Dunes with over 10,000 acres of dunes, the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway and Craters of the Moon National Monument.
Idaho state parks and recreation areas
Idaho claims the largest amount of wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Henrys Lake State Park and Harriman State Park and wildlife refuge are notable and near. Just across the state line is Squirrel Meadows recreation area.
Waterfalls
Why did they name it the Fall River? Because of the many waterfalls formed as the river carved its way out of the southwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. Up-river, Cave Falls is a spectacular sight. Nearby Upper Mesa Falls and Lower Mesa Falls have bigger dropoffs than you might anticipate.

Take the Teton Loop Scenic Byway up through Yellowstone, down through Grand Teton National Park and over the Teton pass for incredible vistas. Or, take a road trip to Sun Valley in Ketchum.
Snowmobiling and ATV recreation
There are over 7000 miles of snowmobile trails in Idaho. Squirrel Meadows is a popular site and BLM lands and roads are accessible and maintained.
Idaho history
The Snake River Plain is rich in history. The valley was originally inhabited by Shoshone and Bannock Indian tribes. Explorer and mountain man John Colter left the Lewis and Clark expedition and trekked across what was later dubbed Pierre's Hole, a fur trapper's rendezvous west of the Tetons. The Oregon trail also crossed the area. Many museums and points of interest, including the Upper Snake River Valley Historical Museum, the Fremont County Historical Society Museum and the Teton County Historical Museum in Driggs document the area's past.
Shopping
The stores and Grand Teton Mall in nearby Idaho Falls will sell most of what you can't find locally. Be sure to browse the western boutiques and art galleries in Jackson Hole, and do some antiquing along the way. Salt Lake City, 3 1/5 hours away can fill your big city needs.
Miscellaneous eastern Idaho
Try your luck digging for opals at the Spencer Opal Mine and cool down later at the pool at Green Canyon Hot Springs, a local favorite.
